A body-camera video showing a confrontation between a transgender student and campus police at the University of Central Florida has gone viral after being released this week, reigniting debate over police interactions and gender identity.
The footage, recorded on February 5, 2025, shows 27-year-old Jarrett Vick becoming visibly distressed after an officer referred to Vick using male pronouns. Vick repeatedly demanded to be addressed with female pronouns while shouting at officers, prompting police to call for backup.
According to reports, officers initially responded to an unrelated disturbance on campus before the encounter escalated. The video shows officers warning Vick to calm down before deploying pepper spray. Police later used a Taser after alleging that Vick attempted to kick and swing at officers during efforts to make the arrest.
Vick was subsequently arrested and charged with battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. Court records show Vick pleaded not guilty to the charges, and the case was later marked as closed following court proceedings in January 2026.
Speaking to the New York Post, Vick alleged that police had harassed them during the incident and said the subsequent media attention had led to further harassment. Neither the University of Central Florida Police Department nor the Orange County Sheriff's Office immediately commented following the video's release.
