A newly released body-camera video has captured the disturbing moments after a six-year-old Virginia boy shot his teacher in the chest, showing the child cursing at adults, challenging police officers and admitting that he stole the gun from his mother. The footage was recorded after the January 6, 2023 shooting at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Virginia, where first-grade teacher Abby Zwerner was shot in front of her pupils. The boy, identified in court records only as J.T., was being restrained by reading specialist Amy Kovac when police arrived at the classroom. According to the footage, J.T. became confrontational, asking officers whether they wanted to fight him and using repeated profanity. At one point, he directed an expletive at Kovac as she attempted to calm him down. The video also captures the child telling officers that he had taken the 9mm handgun from his mother. “I stole that from my mom,” he said, according to reports on the newly released footage. He also told officers he did not care if they called for backup or if he went to jail. The footage shows officers securing the weapon, which had been found on the classroom floor, while Kovac explained that she had rushed into the room after hearing the gunshot and seeing Zwerner bleeding. She also told police that the boy had been on a modified school schedule and that it was his first week attending school without his mother accompanying him. Court records show that J.T. took the loaded handgun from his mother's belongings before bringing it to school. During the afternoon class, he pulled the weapon from his clothing and fired one shot at Zwerner, striking her hand before the bullet entered her upper chest. Zwerner survived the shooting but suffered serious injuries. She later won a $10 million civil judgment against former Richneck assistant principal Ebony Parker after a jury found her liable in a case alleging that warnings about the child and a possible gun had not been properly acted upon. The newly released footage adds a startling new glimpse into the immediate aftermath of a shooting that shocked the United States, revealing the child's behavior as police attempted to take control of the classroom. The footage was unsealed more than three years after the shooting following efforts by local news organizations to obtain its release.
