A Utah man who spent more than 40 years on death row has been released after new DNA tests found no link between him and a 1985 murder. Douglas Stewart Carter, 71, was convicted of killing Eva Olesen but has always maintained his innocence. Two witnesses later withdrew their testimony, while new DNA evidence excluded Carter from genetic material found at the crime scene. A judge ordered his release on bail, but he will wear a GPS monitor as prosecutors continue reviewing the case. A new trial is scheduled for 2027.
