For the past two days, Malawians have been gripped by uncertainty following the reported disappearance and alleged murder of a well-known businesswoman from Mzuzu.
According to unverified reports circulating on social media, the woman, whose identity is being withheld, is feared to have been abducted and killed. The reports allege that those behind the incident took possession of her mobile phone and vehicle before posting disturbing messages and images from her accounts. The posts allegedly instructed relatives where to find or dispose of her body, while suggesting that the vehicle and phone could be used to trace her whereabouts.
The incident has sparked widespread debate, with some people questioning whether the alleged murder could have been staged. They argue that the woman may have faked her own death to evade repaying millions of kwacha in debts.
Their claims stem from a report published by Zodiak Online on February 11, 2025, which stated that the businesswoman had been arrested for allegedly defrauding a business partner of about K41 million. According to the report, the court later ordered her to repay the money.
Meanwhile, the Malawi Police Service in the Northern Region has launched an investigation into the matter.
Northern Region Police Public Relations Officer Cecelia Mfune confirmed that police have arrested some of the woman's relatives after investigators discovered inconsistencies between the information initially provided when reporting her disappearance and subsequent statements made during the investigation.
The case remains under investigation, and police are yet to establish exactly what happened. Authorities have urged the public to refrain from speculation as investigations continue.
