Teachers at Kobedi AME Zion Primary and Junior High School in Ghana’s Bono Region have reportedly abandoned classes indefinitely following the deaths of two teachers, including head teacher Madam Gladys Dorlo Batinge, under circumstances that have triggered fear and tension within the community. According to local reports, the boycott began on May 18, leaving classrooms locked and pupils roaming around the community during school hours after teachers collectively refused to return to work. The incident has been surrounded by rumours and claims within the community that the deaths may be linked to an alleged curse reportedly invoked by a student after accusations of extortion against school authorities. Some residents told local media that fear associated with local traditional beliefs and a deity connected to the alleged curse contributed to the teachers’ decision to stay away from the school. A teacher at the school reportedly confirmed that staff members had resolved not to resume classes until the alleged curse is revoked. Authorities had not officially commented on the matter at the time of reporting.
