Parliament on Monday has paid tribute to the Malawi Women's National Football Team, the Scorchers, for their outstanding performance at the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), describing their achievement as a source of national pride.
Presiding over the sitting, Speaker of the August House, Sameer Suleman commended the team for exceeding expectations in their maiden appearance at the continental tournament and called for increased financial support to sustain the growth of women's football in the country.
He urged Members of Parliament, both men and women, to join other Malawians in welcoming the team upon their arrival, saying the players deserved recognition for their dedication and achievements.
The Speaker expressed confidence that, with continued support and adequate funding, the Scorchers would continue excelling on the continental stage, adding that he believed the 2026 WAFCON trophy is coming home.
The Scorchers have enjoyed a dream WAFCON debut, defeating record champions Nigeria 3-2 before beating hosts Egypt 3-1 to top their group and advance to the knockout stage.
