Nigeria has been named the world's most generous country in the 2026 World Giving Report, while Malawi secured a place in the global top 10 by ranking 10th.

The report measures generosity by the proportion of personal income donated to charitable causes, rather than the total amount of money given.

Nigeria led the rankings with citizens donating an average of 2.83 percent of their income, followed by Egypt at 2.45 percent. Ghana and China shared third place after each recorded donations equivalent to 2.19 percent of personal income.

Kenya ranked fifth with 2.13 percent, followed by Uganda at 2.04 percent. India, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates tied at 1.92 percent, while Malawi rounded out the top 10 with 1.80 percent.

The findings highlight Africa's strong culture of generosity, with Nigeria, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda and Malawi all featuring in the world's top 10 most generous countries.

The report also clarifies claims circulating on social media that Ghana is the world's second most generous country. According to the official rankings, Egypt occupies second place, with Ghana sharing third position with China.
