A Malawian national has died after collapsing on a bus transporting undocumented migrants from the Musina Temporary Repatriation Centre in Limpopo, South Africa, towards the Beitbridge Border Post.
South African Home Affairs officials confirmed that the incident occurred shortly after the bus had departed the centre as part of an ongoing repatriation programme involving Malawian and Zimbabwean nationals.
According to Limpopo Home Affairs head Albert Matsaung, the bus had travelled about 15 kilometres when the man complained that he was feeling excessively hot. Witnesses said he removed his shirt before suddenly collapsing.
The driver immediately turned the bus around and returned to the Musina Temporary Repatriation Centre, where emergency medical personnel and police were called to the scene.
Emergency services declared the man dead on arrival.
Authorities said the cause of death remains unknown and will be determined through medical and forensic investigations.
The tragedy comes amid continued repatriation operations in northern South Africa, where thousands of undocumented migrants have been processed for voluntary return to their home countries following heightened immigration enforcement measures.
The death also follows last week's fatal crash involving a repatriation bus near the Beitbridge Border Post, in which the driver died and several Malawian passengers were injured.
South African authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased, while investigations into the latest incident are continuing.
