In a moment that has gone viral around the world, former U.S. President Donald Trump raised eyebrows—and a few laughs—by saying he’d like to be the next pope.
Speaking after attending Pope Francis’ funeral at the Vatican, Trump was asked who he thought should replace the late pontiff. Without hesitation, he responded, “I think I’d be my number one choice.” Though clearly said in jest, the comment stirred instant reactions across media platforms.
Trump later downplayed the remark, explaining he wasn’t seriously vying for the position and that he didn’t have a strong preference. However, he did name New York’s Cardinal Timothy Dolan as someone he thought could handle the role. Dolan is known for his traditionalist views and is among the American cardinals expected to be part of the upcoming papal conclave.
Despite that, Vatican observers say the election of an American pope is unlikely due to concerns about political and global influence associated with the U.S.
Adding to the media frenzy, Trump also stood out at the funeral by wearing a bright blue suit, in stark contrast to the traditional black attire worn by most other dignitaries. Social media was quick to pick up on the bold fashion statement, sparking debate online.
As with many things Trump, the mix of humour, controversy, and bold headlines continues to keep him at the center of global conversation—even in matters of the Church.
