As Malawi clocks 60 years of independence today, The President of Malawi, Dr. Lazarus Chakwera led the prayers at the national service of worship to commemorate 60th independence anniversary but also honor the lives of Late Vice President Dr. Saulos Chilima along with others at the BICC in Lilongwe.
President Lazarus Chakwera led the celebrations at the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe, where he delivered a keynote address. “As we celebrate our independence, we reflect on our journey and the resilience of our people. We have faced many challenges, but we have always emerged stronger and more united,” he said. forward
The event was attended by dignitaries, including former presidents, government officials, and international representatives, traditional figureheads and also religious figureheads.
In his address, President Chakwera highlighted the country’s progress in areas such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure development. He also acknowledged the challenges faced by the country, including poverty, corruption, and economic inequality.
The President emphasized the need for unity and resilience in addressing these challenges. “We must continue to stand together and work towards a brighter future for all Malawians. We owe it to ourselves, our children, and our ancestors who fought for our freedom,” he said.
The prayers were under the theme, “United In Resilience: Moving Forward Together” which reflects the country’s determination to build a better future despite the challenges faced. Malawi’s independence celebration is a testament to the country’s strength and determination to move forward together.
Traditionally independence celebrations are marked by activities such as prayers, music performances and a football match.However, this year’s celebration is different as it happens while the nation mourns as such prayers have been organised in honour of the former Vice President Saulos Chilima and eight others who died in a plane crash.
Speaking at the national service, Apostle Esau Banda of the Pentecost International Christian Centre (PICC) called for unity among Malawians despite numerous challenges which the country is facing.
In his sermon at the national service of prayers to commemorate Malawi’s 60th independence anniversary, Apostle Banda stressed the need to rise against religious and political differences for the country to achieve her development aspirations.
In a similar development, at least 2,730,960 million kwacha, 370 US dollars and 5 Euros worth of funds were raised at the national service all of which has been given to Malawi’s Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA).
