Canada has joined a growing list of countries warning their citizens to exercise a high degree of caution when travelling to South Africa, citing persistent violent crime and serious personal safety risks. In its latest travel advisory, the Canadian government notes that crimes such as armed robberies, carjackings, assaults, home invasions and kidnappings remain widespread and can affect both locals and foreign visitors, particularly in major cities.
The advisory highlights increased risks after dark, as well as dangers linked to road travel, airport areas and popular tourist zones, where travellers have been targeted. Authorities recommend avoiding isolated areas, limiting night travel, keeping valuables out of sight and using reputable transport and accommodation.
Canada’s warning aligns with similar advisories from the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia, all of which urge heightened vigilance due to South Africa’s high crime rate. While travel is not banned, officials stress that visitors should remain alert, informed and cautious throughout their stay.
