Doctors in Vietnam have successfully performed the country’s first penis transplant, using an organ donated by a brain-dead donor in a groundbreaking medical procedure.
The recipient, a 43-year-old man, underwent the complex surgery after losing part of his penis during a previous medical procedure. He had undergone a partial penectomy four years ago at Hanoi’s Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, one of Vietnam’s leading surgical centres.
The transplant was carried out by a team of specialists who carefully connected blood vessels, nerves and other tissues to restore the function of the transplanted organ. The procedure required advanced surgical techniques and close coordination among medical experts.
Doctors say the operation represents a significant milestone for Vietnam’s healthcare sector and could provide hope for patients who have suffered severe genital injuries or loss caused by accidents, illness or other medical conditions.
The patient is now recovering under medical supervision as doctors continue monitoring the transplant’s function and long-term outcome. The success of the procedure is expected to contribute valuable experience to the growing field of reconstructive and transplant surgery.
