Nigerian music superstar Tiwa Savage has pledged to collaborate with Malawian singer Temwah on a song and music video, a development expected to give the local artist greater exposure on the international music scene.
Savage made the commitment on Wednesday during a creative industry panel in Malawi where she interacted with Temwah and other artists on issues affecting the growth and commercialisation of the creative sector.
The commitment followed a question from Temwah on how artists can secure greater recognition and financial support from corporate organisations, particularly in comparison with musicians in other countries.
In response, Savage encouraged Malawian artists to believe in their talent and develop confidence in their work, saying success should begin with artists recognising the value of their own abilities.
Savage then surprised the gathering by announcing that she would work with Temwah on a collaborative song and music video.
The proposed collaboration would provide Temwah, whose real name is Temwa Gondwe, with an opportunity to reach new audiences beyond Malawi, while also strengthening musical links between Malawi and Nigeria.
Temwah is an independent Malawian singer and songwriter whose music incorporates R&B, Afro-soul and other contemporary African sounds. She has released songs including “Stranger”, “Yesu Wanga” and “Superstar (Remix)”.
Savage's pledge comes during her visit to Malawi under the United Nations Spotlight Initiative, through which she is engaging different groups on efforts to end violence against women and girls.
During her visit, Savage has also announced a K17.5 million donation to Music Crossroads Malawi to support young women creatives and expressed plans to establish the Tiwa Savage Music Foundation in Malawi.
The proposed Temwah collaboration adds another dimension to Savage's engagement with Malawi's creative industry and could further raise the profile of Malawian music on the international stage.
