South African actor S'dumo Mtshali says he is happy to embrace being called "Netflix's most hated man" after his gripping portrayal of Jonasi Gomora in the hit series The Polygamist, admitting that fans still struggle to separate him from the character. The Netflix drama, based on Zimbabwean author Sue Nyathi's bestselling novel, has become one of Southern Africa's most talked-about series since its release, with Jonasi's web of lies, infidelity and manipulation sparking heated debates across social media. Speaking in a recent interview with CNN Africa, Mtshali laughed off the backlash, saying he would gladly "own" the title of Netflix's most hated man for now, even as people continue to call him "Jonasi" whenever they see him in public. The award-winning actor said the strong reactions from viewers show just how deeply the story has resonated, adding that portraying such a complex character was both challenging and rewarding. Mtshali has, however, urged viewers not to glorify Jonasi's lifestyle, describing the character as a cautionary tale rather than someone to admire. He said Jonasi's repeated attempts to escape the consequences of his actions only trapped him in an ever-deepening cycle of deception that ultimately destroyed his life. The actor stressed that he shares little in common with the character and hopes audiences focus on the lessons the story offers about accountability, relationships and the consequences of living a double life. Despite becoming one of the region's most disliked fictional characters, Mtshali said he is proud to have helped tell a powerful story that continues to spark conversations about masculinity, trust and family across Africa.
