Media mogul and philanthropist Oprah Winfrey has announced that the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa will close in 2027, bringing to an end two decades of educating and empowering young women.
The academy was opened in 2007 with the aim of providing quality education and leadership opportunities to academically gifted girls from disadvantaged backgrounds across South Africa.
Over the past 20 years, the school has produced hundreds of graduates, many of whom have gone on to study at leading universities and build successful careers in different fields.
Winfrey said the academy has fulfilled its mission of developing young female leaders and creating opportunities for girls who may not otherwise have had access to such an education.
The school is expected to complete its final academic programmes before officially closing in 2027, marking the end of a significant chapter in Oprah Winfrey’s philanthropic work in South Africa.
