Popcaan has been officially enstooled as a chief in Ghana’s Asebu Traditional Area during a colourful traditional ceremony. The Jamaican star, born Andrae Hugh Sutherland, received the stool name Nana Arkoh Kese I and was installed as Aboafohen (Development Chief) of the Apagyahen Division.
Dressed in kente and traditional beads, he went through customary rites including libation and symbolic placement on the stool. The title recognises his influence and is expected to promote community development and cultural ties between Ghana and the diaspora.
While many praised the honour as a symbol of African unity, others debated the growing trend of awarding chieftaincy titles to foreign celebrities.
Traditional leaders at the ceremony urged the artiste to use his global platform to inspire young people and support initiatives that will benefit the local community. They stressed that the honour comes with responsibility, not just prestige, and expressed confidence in his ability to serve as a positive ambassador.
The enstoolment further strengthens cultural links between Jamaica and Ghana, highlighting shared historical roots and creative exchange through music. It also reinforces Ghana’s continued outreach to the African diaspora, positioning the country as a key destination for cultural reconnection and collaboration.
