“ FORGIVENESS DOES NOT REMOVE ACCOUNTABILITY,” BUSHIRI TAKES LEGAL ACTION OVER DAUGHTER’S DEATH

Prophet Shepherd Bushiri has announced plans to sue former Director of Public Prosecutions, Steve Kayuni, over the tragic death of his eight-year-old daughter, who died in 2021 after being blocked from leaving Malawi for urgent medical treatment.

Bushiri explained that during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, his daughter was scheduled to travel to Kenya for specialized care. However, upon arrival at Lilongwe International Airport, an injunction was issued by Mr. Kayuni preventing her from leaving the country. He claimed to have received instructions from South African officials to act in that manner.

The child, already in critical condition, was detained at the airport for five days while Bushiri’s legal team fought to lift the injunction. By the time the court finally allowed her to travel, it was too late — she had lost her life.

Bushiri stated that while he and his family forgave Mr. Kayuni, forgiveness does not eliminate accountability. He said it is time for the law to speak, highlighting that too many officials misuse their power without consequence.

The Prophet has since instructed his lawyers to begin legal proceedings compelling Mr. Kayuni to explain his actions in court.

Bushiri emphasized that this case goes beyond his daughter’s death — it is about protecting the rights of all Malawian children to life and medical care, as guaranteed under the Constitution and international human rights law.

“Justice delayed took my daughter’s life, but justice denied will not silence her memory,” he said.
