There is a need to take the newly released National Aids Commission (NAC) report seriously as it has worrisome information in regards to the most victims of Human Infection Virus (HIV) infection.
According to the report, girls and young women of ages between 15-24 are the most victims of new infections as these are the most targeted by old men. Out 100, 22 girls and young women gets infected while out 100, 41 boys and men are living with HIV/AIDS but are unaware.
According to The National Aids Commission (NAC) Prevention and Management Officer, Francis Mabedi, told journalists in Blantyre today.
For instance, out of 15,000 new HIV infections that are recorded annually in Malawi, 22 percent of those are registered among adolescent girls and young women, citing transgenerational sex, power imbalances when it comes to negotiating about sex between a man and a woman, and economic challenges.The numbers are high among University students from the cities of Lilongwe, Blantyre, Zomba and and Mzuzu
NAC is hopeful that the new HIV and Aids Act will play a significant role in preventing and managing HIV/AIDS-related issues in Malawi and has since urged journalist to raise awareness of the Act.
