In a major breakthrough, Assistant Commissioner Edwin Magalasi, newly appointed Officer-in-Charge of Lingadzi Police Station, has dismantled a sophisticated criminal network responsible for a string of robberies targeting journalists, civil servants, and businesspeople in Lilongwe.
The gang, made up of youths under 27, had been terrorizing motorists at A.B.C. along Gateway Mall and Bingu Stadium, making off with laptops and phones.
On September 3, 2024, Magalasi led his detectives and officers on zone patrol to conduct intelligence-driven raids, resulting in the arrest of eight suspects:
1. Mphatso Kachepa (27) – aka Demuze
2. Chrispin Banda (26) – aka Jupapa
3. Daniel Harry (20)
4. Innocent Chiyembeko (16) – aka DJ
5. Charles Masina (17)
6. Davie Mendeule (27)
7. Moffat Mponda (20) – aka Mogobwayi
8. Sanudi Amid (19)
The arrests mark a crucial step forward in the fight against crime in Lilongwe, bringing relief and optimism to residents. Magalasi’s proactive approach and strategic leadership have sent a strong message to criminals, indicating that Lingadzi Police will not tolerate criminal activity. Since his appointment two weeks ago, Magalasi’s leadership has yielded significant results.
The operation resulted in the recovery of four stolen mobile phones, which have already been identified by their owners.*
